Christian Service Commission
St. Patrick Food Pantry Christian Service is responsible for operating the food pantry five days a week, most weeks of the year. In 2008 we provided food to 6,122 households comprised of more than 7,000 individuals. In these tough economic times, we are seeing an increase in the number of people needing food for themselves and their families. We depend on food or monetary donations from schools, churches, businesses, and individuals to help us help the hungry. We also have occasional fundraising events which enable us to continue our work. This past Valentine’s Day, we hosted a dinner dance at the American Polish Cultural Center, the net profits of which will go directly into our budget. In September this commission distributes backpacks filled with school supplies which are supplied by a donor parish, and we host a Halloween Costume Party for children in the neighborhood, complete with games, a hayride, and food. At Thanksgiving and Christmas, we distribute large food boxes to qualifying families, and include Christmas gifts for the children in those families. This past Christmas, with some help from our friends in other parishes, we delivered gifts to 233 children. At least once a year, we plan, cook, and serve a meal for the senior citizens next door at the St. Patrick Senior Center. St. Patrick Food Pantry is allowed to continue to serve the poor because of the generosity of others. Others like you! Continue His Dream Campaign Named in honor of Fr. Tom Duffey, the campaign was announced in the fourth quarter of 2007 and rolled out with a major mail solicitation campaign in January, 2008. It's objective is to help fund the work of the St. Patrick Food Pantry through contributions from parishioners and friends of St. Patrick. If you would like to make a donation to honor Fr. Duffey and support the food pantry, please send a check made payable to St. Patrick Food Pantry with Continue His Dream written in the memo section to: St. Patrick Church, 58 Parsons, Detroit, MI 48201. St. Thomas a Becket Bridging Program We have forged a wonderful bridging relationship with the parishioners of St. Thomas a Becket Parish in Canton, MI. Our two congregations have enjoyed getting to know one another at social and religious events and we have worked together on charitable activities and fund raising events. |
